HAWAIIAN RETREATS

I offer with love, to those seeking personal retreat, this beautiful place in which to rest, restore, transform and heal. The land invites your creative energy. You can dream, journal, write, draw and paint in this lovely location.

 

About the Land

I purchased a unique piece of land in early spring of 2003. An ancient collapsed lava tube has created a unique topography that includes a canyon, caves, lava tubes, fields, and upper terraces with ocean views. When I began to form a relationship with this land I would sit, talk, and listen to it. I realized in these early conversations that what I created would be not only for me but for community.

A group of friends, including most notably Stephen Smith, put long hours of work into preparing the land intended for the buildings and gardens. Over nine months we pruned dead wood out of trees, pulled grass, moved rocks and uncovered the most beautiful lichen-covered old flow lava. The land informed us. Open spaces became building sites. The lichen-covered lava ridges defined the layout of the extensive gardens, and a lava bubble (puka) became the Koi Pond. The paths were naturally formed by the lava flow centuries ago. The land knew what it wanted to become. We became the hands to create it.

The Buildings

Construction of the buildings, begun in early 2004, was completed in spring of 2005. Designed and built by Kau builder Bill Ward and Canadian carpenter Bruce Everett, each building is similar in style but unique in architectural detail. The Temple room has a high pitched roof modeled after the local Wood Valley Temple. This was a feat in bracing design and execution. The Garden room is set down into a garden area next to the Koi Pond. All four sides of this room are screened, open to the sounds of palm fronds swaying and the Koi pond's burbling water. The Kitchen building is open and spacious with plenty of room to entertain. It is complemented by a generous deck, which also connects with the Temple room. All three buildings are single wall construction with beautiful interior woodworking details. The roofs are hipped with big overhangs and turn up in traditional Asian style. Each building has been designed with maximum airflow in mind.

Accomodations

Three beautiful Asian style buildings set in a rich and unique landscape. The three buildings are a 320 sq.ft. Master Bedroom (Temple Room) with queen bed, sitting area, half bath, closet and private deck, a 340 sq.ft. Kitchen/Dining room with full bath, laundry facilities and adjoining deck, and a large Living/Sleeping room (Garden Room) that has both a lounging couch area and two twin beds surrounded by gardens and Koi pond. You may rent one of the sleeping areas with shared kitchen or the entire compound.

Location

Hawaiian Ranchos, adjacent to Ocean View, is near the southern tip of the Big Island. Its 3000 acres were divided in the early 60's into 3-acre lots. Most of the lots were purchased for retirement homes or investments and remain undeveloped today. The roads are ideal for walking and biking with very few homes or cars. Early morning walks give you the sun rising in the east and brilliant cloud formations over the ocean, Evening walks sport gorgeous sunsets. With no street lights the nights are quiet and starlit. Bring a flashlight and walk under the stars or recline on one of the decks.

My Big Island retreat is offered to friends, family and clients as a personal or family sanctuary. Ideal for relaxation, personal investigation, creative time (painting, drawing, writing), and meditation.

I'm often living on site and offer in-person healing sessions.

Garden Room

5 night minimum. The building includes open air garden atmosphere next to Koi Pond with two twin beds and lounging area. Shared kitchen, dining and bathing area. Access to all gardens.

Temple Room

5 night minimum. The building includes Queen bed, lounging area, half bath and private decks. Shared kitchen, dining and bathing area. Access to all gardens.

Rental rates for the entire compound can be requested for special events.

All proceeds go directly into this project. The buildings, gardens, paths, decks and fences require regular upkeep. There are also plans for a large community room that will provide a yoga/dance space and additional sleeping areas. I appreciate all the support that has been offered previously and hope that you will share in helping to manifest this dream.

Each year there will be several opportunities to come and share this space for work trade. These weeks will be community events full of fun, working on the land and getting to know a new community of people.
